Disposing of Milkweed Bugs

12/05/2019

Procedure:

Since Milkweed Bugs are pests and have no predators, these insects will need to be disposed of in a particular way, rather than released into the wild.

You may also keep a colony of Milkweed Bugs alive to continue this experiment for years to come. The insects can live in a small plastic container with a breathable lid. Cotton can be placed inside the container for the insects to lay eggs in. They require water and seeds and can live in a crowded habitat.

If you wish to dispose of the Milkweed Bugs the steps are listed below:

  • If you have a spacious enough freezer, place all the plastic deli containers used by the students and place in the freezer for a minimum of 24 hours. If there is limited space in your freezer, carefully place the insects from each container into one small container that can easily fit into your freezer. Freeze for 24 hours.
  • After the insects have been in the freezer for a minimum of 24 hours, dispose of them in a compost/green waste container or in the trash.
  • Wash the materials and save for next fall!
